Cy-Fair ISD Promotes Healthy EatingHairgrove Elementary students are learning about healthy eating by being involved in maintaining and growing a healthy organic garden. Lessons are taught to all 3rd grade students twice a month.
The Ready to Grow Gardens organization is owned and operated by Mrs. Stephanie Baker, who lives in
Cypress, Texas. She has worked to design and build six other gardens throughout the Cy-Fair school district. All while incorporating science curriculum objectives set by the school district.
The children have learned to plant and care for different species of lettuce, turnips and other healthy vegetables. We recently celebrated a salad party day where the students each selected and cleaned a vast amount of lettuce and prepared it to serve to the entire 3rd grade class with the help of the Hairgrove staff members.
Hairgrove Elementary’s garden provides a hands-on opportunity
to discover the delight and wonder of tending a garden in real life. The children are fascinated by the scientific process all the while learning about the environmental side of gardening. It is truly a treat, not only for the 3rd grade students, but our entire school and community. The garden is a real benefit to our school.
